About Organization

Founded in October 2019, Anichigu Luma Amenigini Garifuna Women (ALAGW)  supports and consults with domestic workers about their rights and duties as domestic employees in our Garifuna and Black Latinx communities mainly located in South Seattle and South King County. We are currently fiscally sponsored by Rooted in Vibrant Communities (RVC) who support our organizational financial management, HR and Payroll.

Our mission is to strengthen the empowerment of Garifuna women and expand the knowledge acquired over generations. We develop and expand the socialization of our Garifuna culture, which is covered by the 2007 UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.  We work to dismantle the individual and systemic barriers faced by Garifuna domestic workers. We offer a monthly food pantry and partner with local health and social service providers to provide workshops and services to our community members during food pantry days.

We are 100% Garifuna immigrant-organized and led by nine women: two co-directors and seven women member volunteers who are youth and elders, domestic workers, and majority parents. We deeply understand the issues and circumstances facing the community because we are in it. In our short history, we have built a strong reputation as an impactful and influential group. Our members do not see themselves as being “served” by ALAGW. Rather, they feel they are part of the team working with us.

We are looking to build our team with individuals aligned with our mission and vision, who are committed to grow our organization toward sustainability for a generation of future Garifuna women leaders.
